The name "Trail View" tells it all - the park serves as a narrow connector along the north-south Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail.
Park Description:
The Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail (white blaze) is a 19.5-mile north-south route from Cold Spring Harbor State Park to Massapequa. In an area of heavy development, this trail is a narrow belt of green space that offers sights of picturesque ponds, morainal ridges, open fields and diverse flora and fauna.
Trail View is a 7.5-mile linear park serving as a corridor for part of the Greenbelt.
The park was established along a right-of-way originally acquired in the 1960s by the State of New York for the proposed northern extension of the Bethpage State Parkway that would have connected Bethpage State Park to Caumsett State Historic Park. Ultimately, to the benefit of hikers, bikers and others enjoying the outdoors, the parkway was never built, and in the summer of 2002 the property was dedicated as a state park.
The park is within the Coastal Plain physiographic province, which is characterized as undulating and rolling topography. In general, the elevation ranges from 140 to 260 feet above sea level. The area is generally flat in the south, with more hilly areas in the north. The area consists of stands of oak and oak-pine forest, shrub lands, and successional old-field. In many areas, a hedge of more mature trees bound the edge of the parkland.
